Archery is a sport that requires the archer to hit a target with a bow and arrow. Competitive Archery involves shooting an arrow at a target from a set distance. Competitive Archery is the most popular form of archery worldwide and is called target archery. A form particularly popular in England and America is field archery, which involves shots at targets generally set at various distances in a wooded setting.

The health and fitness benefits from archery come from using the proper form in the upper body. Arm strength and fluid motion are important issues in competitive archery. The archer should also use the proper posture to essentially hold his body in a ‘T’ formation. Archers also use their back muscles in the arrow release thereby using more of their body than just their arms.

There are different tournament rules for different organizations. Archers will want to investigate those rules before participating in competitions. Generally in target archery you will be required to hit a target from various distances. Olympic rules have been developed from the International Archery Federation rules.

The competitions can be held indoors or outdoors. There is generally a set time frame to complete an end. Each end consists of 3 or 6 arrows. The target has 10 rings with corresponding number scores. This allows the archers to come up with a sum to determine the winner. The target may also be of different sizes possibly depending on how far the archer is from the target.

Field archery generally happens outdoors in a variety of different landscapes. There are twenty eight targets which can be in field rounds or hunter rounds. Field rounds are usually at equal distances. Hunter rounds are at a variety of distances from each other. Animal rounds use a target in the shape of an animal at various distances. The archer shoots in a prescribed manner receiving points for different vital and non-vital area shots.

Archery strengthens every area of your arms in keeping the proper form. From the forearms, to biceps, to triceps, or deltoids you will experience the increase stamina over time. You will also strengthen your back with the T posture and arrow release from your body.
