Basketball is a team sport made up of ten people in total with five on each side. It is played in a court that is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The main objective of the game is to get the ball into the opponent’s rim as many times as possible while keeping the opponent from getting the ball into your team’s rim. In other words, score more baskets than you concede to your opposition.
Since it is a team sport, all five members in a basketball team need to work in conjunction with each other. The performance of each team member has immediate consequences on the overall performance of the team.
Although it is a game that is played professional and even has a professional body governing the conduct of players and overseeing the rules of the game, basketball is a game that can be played for recreational purposes between friends and family members. Once there is a rim, a full court is not even needed for an impromptu game of basketball to begin.
Basketball is a game that requires a lot of moves including dribbling, shooting hoops, passing and defending. It involves a lot of running around the court and jumping. It is not a free-flowing game in that each team member has a previously assigned duty or position.
To effectively play the game of basketball, a player would need to have upper and lower body fitness. Speed and agility are essential and the ability to manoeuvre around the court cannot be over emphasized. As a result, basketball players usually incorporate sprinting runs into their practice regime because the game is made up of several short sprints. Marathon running is also incorporated to build endurance as basketball calls for a lot of endurance from the players.
The ability to dunk in basketball is one that is coveted by all players alike. However there is the myth that that ability comes only with height. On the contrary, it is an acquired skill; one acquired through intense and consistent practice.
