Fencing

Plan and track the result of your Fencing.

From the days of Homer’s Iliad and before, people have been fighting with swords. There were fencing schools as far back as the 12th century. Fencing began as practice for actual duels, but eventually evolved into a sport for its own sake. During the 20th century, the fencing swords were electrified, simplifying scoring. Fencing has become a sport that promotes Health and Fitness.

There are three types of swords used in fencing, and each requires different techniques. A foil, for instance, is a light fencing sword which is thin and straight. Only the tip of the foil can be used to make a hit, and only on the front or the back of the torso. The saber can make hits with the sides as well as the tip, and its target area is the torso and arms, except for the hands. The epee has a target area that covers the entire body. It has a button on the tip, similar to the one on the foil. However, it is a heavier blade.

Footwork and arm thrusts must be synchronized in such a fashion so that the tempo of the exchange is maintained. Tempo is especially important in foil fencing. Foil fencing is started with an attack, and parries follow, the attack and defense occurring in the exchange until the required number of touches has been reached. Monitor your fencing practice with the Workout and Fitness Tracker.

A Flunge is a special foot movement done in saber fighting because of the rule that the feet must not cross. It means leaping forward with one foot ahead and the other foot behind for the duration of the leap, landing solidly in a suitable position for scoring. In fact, with sabers, footwork takes precedent over contact with the blades. Include footwork practice in your Workout Schedule.

In epee fighting, the counter-attack is one of the most important moves of all; so important in fact that a good portion of the exchanges often stem from one fencer trying to entice the other into attacking. A high level of concentration and aim are necessary for epee, as the scoring is based on who gets the most hits.
